Places I Have Never Been by Anna Joyce
Rare Device is proud to present Places I Have Never Been by Anna Joyce. Places I Have Never Been is a group of large and medium format gouache paintings, focusing on color, pattern, and the search for pleasure amid the isolation Anna experienced during the pandemic. "I use painting as a release from the monotony and anxiety of living through the Covid-19 pandemic, and instead immerse myself in a woman’s world completely of my own design."
Show Dates: Friday, August 5th - Sunday, September 11th
Reception: Friday, August 5th, 6-8pm
Artist Statement: I created these paintings in my home at the dining room table amid the hum of my domestic life. My cats, who keep me company while I paint, often make their way into my compositions as a means to ground my real life inside of imagination.
I culled each interior from aspirational sources such as glossy magazines or catalogs and then adapted each to suit my whims.
The female figures in each painting are depicted alone, relaxed, and free from domestic responsibilities. Any male figures that were once featured in the source material have been removed.
