Exhale by Ariel Berk
The Rare Device Team is very excited to announce our next gallery show, Exhale by Ariel Berk. Ariel (also known as “Earl”) grew up in New Hampshire but has called San Francisco home for the last decade. In an ongoing bicoastal love affair, she feels most at ease in the various woods and waters of California and New England.
" For my 30th birthday I was generously gifted a point and shoot film camera. The first couple years of my 30s turned out to be tumultuous and deeply destabilizing. Film photography became one way to practice presence, patience and moving intentionally through the swirl. Exhale is a collection of moments (among many others not captured on camera) which had a calm to them that felt like a deep, grateful breath in and out."
" Other than a couple of college classes, I have very little technical training when it comes to photography, especially with film. For me, photography has always been a practice in romanticizing the various fragments and frames of life. Film has demanded an additional level of embracing unedited imperfection - that things may not always turn out as hoped or planned, but the process of taking the time to really appreciate what’s in front of me can be as fulfilling as what ultimately comes out of the camera."
When not stomping around with her camera, she also dabbles in weaving, painting and throwing lopsided bowls on the wheel. Ariel was grateful to be part of the incredible Rare Device team for three years, and is so excited to return to the shop as a gallery artist. (We're pretty stoked too!)
Join us for Earl's opening reception on Friday, June 6th. To make this a magical event, we've got lots of surprises in store! Snappy Dots (@snappy.dots) will be in the shop starting at 3pm to do flash tattoos. We will be serving Fort Point Beer Co.'s new line of non-alcoholic beers starting at 6pm, and serving up frozen treats for our summer gallery opening!
Show Dates: June 6th - July 20th
Opening Reception: Friday, June 6, 6-8pm (Flash Tattoos start at 3pm!)
