Books Revisited
About Karen Kang: Karen Kang is a mixed media artist living and working in Los Angeles. Her richly textural work has been exhibited in numerous solo, group, and juried exhibitions, both nationally and throughout Southern California. She is particularly drawn to recycled and vintage materials, like old ads and magazines from the 50's. Her art resides in private collections across the country, including the set design department for the Lionsgate film "The Lincoln Lawyer," as well as the home of SNL writer Bob Odenkirk.
"Books Revisited" is a collection of work that uses aged book materials as a foundation for intricate mixed media work. Using materials that have been previously discarded, she allows for something new to emerge on top of or alongside of them, and in so doing, creates an interesting juxtaposition between old and new. The use of color is especially important in this process, as it contributes to the idea of something fresh materializing on a background faded by time. Whether using the book page itself or the insides of book covers, Karen's use of collage, paint, and detailed drawing merge seamlessly together to form a cohesive visual experience.
When not making art, Karen can be found writing, drinking coffee, and photographing her surroundings.
