On December 6, 2014, Betsy Cordes and Adam McCauley joined us at Rare Device Noe Valley for a special children's book reading and signing event with to celebrate their book, Mr. Dog's Christmas At The Hollow Tree Inn.
For the second year in a row, Rare Device hosted local favorite Yellow Owl Workshop in our Divisadero gallery space for a two-month long pop-up. Founded by designer Christine Schmidt, Yellow Owl focuses on original design, bold colors, and ecologically sound materials. The entire diverse range of Yellow Owl products at the pop-up, included letterpress cards, stamp kits, gift tags, notebooks, jewelry, stencils, and more.
Chris also painted the entire wall in a bright, energetic style for the duration of the pop-up in November 1 - January 5, 2015.
A very special show by local artist Tiffanie Turner at the Divisadero gallery for two days only, November 1 and 2. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, Turner created "One For You, One For Me", an exhibit of large scale work. Two of Turner's giant paper marigolds went on display for the two days of Dia de Los Muertos. The marigold, known not only as the "herb of the sun" but as the "flower of the dead", is traditional, symbolic, and imbued with different meanings throughout the world. Turner explores the large scale construction of the heads of marigolds as a meditation on the people she has lost, as well as the way the marigold itself grows.
Each bloom is handmade by Turner and involves individually cutting thousands of paper petals over approximately 120 hours. The finished products span over 40 inches.
Troy Litten is a designer and photographer fueled by an appreciation for and fascination with all forms of visual culture, communication, and expression. Troy collects, curates, and comments on the world he observes and experiences – from strolls down the block to adventures around the globe. Troy is the creator of the award-winning Wanderlust series of books, journals, postcards, and notecards published by Chronicle Books since 2002 and is presently at work on more travel-inspired publications, products, and exhibitions. His first puzzle, Transit Graphics 1000 piece puzzle, was recently published by Galison. Although he’s most at home on the road, Troy lives in San Francisco and has just returned from a trip to Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, and Estonia.
At the puzzle signing, guests were able to purchase the Transit Graphics puzzle, as well as many products from Litten's well-known Wanderlust series, including some titles that are currently out of print. Litten also had high-quality transit prints for sale, and teamed up to complete the actual 1000 piece puzzle at the event.
We invited our friends and neighbors to come to the new store to fête Rare Device's second location. We decked the space out with giant gold balloons, sweets from Noe Valley Bakery , and bubbly from Noe Valley Wine Merchants, located just steps down 24th Street. It was truly a neighborhood affair, and lots of people from the neighborhood stopped by to say hello.
